Our first stop to ride was at the City of Rocks National Park outside of the charming little town of Almo, Idaho.  Wikipedia offers a great description and history of the area.

We camped at the Smokey Mountain Campground, which is located just a couple of miles from town.  There are 38 campsites, sites 33-38 are designated for equestrian guests.  There is 30 amp electrical service, water, partial shade, picnic tables, vehicle pads, and is pet friendly.  There’s also a dump station just outside of the campground.

We very much enjoyed this camp, and were glad it was our first stop.  There were a few issues that could have been “better,” such as the corral system.  Each site has just one corral, and very little room to add highlines for extra horses.  We were lucky that no one was using the “group” corral, which was just big enough to run a hot wire down the middle and still have enough room for a 17HH Thoroughbred and her 15HH Quarter Horse companion.  Also the manure bins were, um, odd.  And full.

Full manure receptacle.

But the views and landscape were incredible, and certainly made up for a little bit of discomfort.  Also the trails were great, not particularly difficult, and again, the visuals were phenomenal.  Would I go back here?  You bet I would!!!  Oh, and the little store in Almo has the BEST ice cream.  Woo hoo!

This map and stats record made with Gaia GPS phone and computer app.  The phone app uses the GPS in your phone, so works even when there is no cell signal.  If you would like to download it for your rides, will you please consider using my affiliate link?  Click here.
